17-year-old facing assault charges after threatening Metrotown passersby with knife

Burnaby RCMP say a 17-year-old boy has been charged with assault after a Tuesday afternoon incident at Metrotown.

According to police, officers were called to the mall around 5:15pm for a report of a person being aggressive and threatening people with a knife.

The suspect then fled towards the SkyTrain station.

When police arrived, they say the teen dropped the knife before reaching for another.

While he dropped to his knees, the RCMP says he didn’t comply with requests and that officers used a Taser as a result—however, the Taser was “ineffective”.

The suspect then tried to escape onto a SkyTrain car, where he was arrested. The RCMP says he was carrying three knives, and no one was injured.

The teen is now facing charges of assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
