5 hills perfect for sledding in Burnaby

Sledding: it’s a time-honoured tradition for Canadian kids (or adults), albeit one we don’t get to do that often in Metro Vancouver. So when we get a beautiful blanket of snow like the one we have now, it’s important to take advantage. Bundle up, grab your toboggan, and head out to one of these hills in Burnaby perfect for sledding your troubles away.

Ron McLean Park

Ron McLean Park is a great spot in the city to bring your sleds and join in on some wintertime fun. It’s got a nice wide expanse and a big steep slope, so there’s ample space to sled and not bump into others. Plus, it’s conveniently located in South Burnaby near Edmonds—less of a drive all the way up a local mountain.

Cariboo Hill Secondary

The high school here has a few slopes perfect for tobogganing in between the turf field and the lower field. It’s also located right in the heart of managing editor Simran Singh’s neighbourhood! While she’s new to the area and hasn’t tried out the slopes at Cariboo Hill Secondary just yet, she tells us she plans to head out there this weekend. Maybe you can find her and her puppy Mylo enjoying the snow!

Alpha Secondary

As you can tell from this photo from 1968 in the City of Burnaby’s library archives, Alpha Secondary has been a popular sledding hill for generations. We might have upgraded our sleds since then—but the fun remains the same! Not to mention, you get amazing views of the mountains from this park in the Brentwood area.

Robert Burnaby Park

Robert Burnaby Park is a picture-perfect location for a little Sunday morning winter fun. Not only does it have a fun little hill near the outdoor pool for sledding, but it’s got beautiful trails to wander through and towering trees that will look stunning in the back of your photos!

Burnaby Mountain Park – honourable mention

Burnaby Mountain is one of the most popular places in Burnaby to go sledding. One Burnaby resident calls it “likely the finest sledding hill in Canada”. This slope is great for gathering speed and momentum and feeling that rush of winter wind in your face. An important note: sledding and tobogganing are not actually allowed here as per the City of Burnaby’s bylaws. There is a road that runs at the bottom of the hill and although most sleds stop before that area, it’s crucial to use caution and your best judgement if you decide to sled here. Folks do still head up there for some winter fun but you have been warned!
