Burnaby breweries approved to make their temporary patios permanent

Studio Brewing and Dageraad Brewing originally opened temporary patios during the pandemic.

Good news, patio lovers: two of Burnaby’s finest beer houses can now expand their temporary patios into permanent fixtures.

City council approved applications from Studio Brewing on Beresford Street and Dageraad Brewing on Thunderbird Crescent that would expand the maximum capacity of both establishments, and will allow for the long-term use of their outdoor patios.

Both breweries will also be allowed to extend their liquor service hours on those patios until 11pm.

Dageraad’s capacity will be increased from 54 to 110 people with a maximum of 50 allowed on the patio. Dageraad has been a Burnaby institution since 2014, and its temporary patio opened in 2020 in response to the pandemic.

Owner and brewer Ben Coli told the Beacon he’s “verbosely excited” about the prospect of transforming the temporary patio, which was originally “thrown together on the cheap during COVID times.”

“Of course, once we had a taste of having outdoor seating, we sure didn't want to go back. And in fact, we still have customers who are more comfortable being outside, and will drink beer out there even in the miserable cold weather of January,” he said.

While Coli said the temporary patio has been a lifesaver during the pandemic, they want to create something a little nicer for the long term. Dageraad plans to build a wheelchair-accessible elevated deck with a roof and proper tables, along with permanent planters to provide a greener atmosphere.

“Unlike the previous patio, which shared its occupant load with the inside of the tasting room, the new patio is going to have its own 50-person occupancy, which will allow us to serve a lot more customers and we'll probably never have a lineup on Fridays after work,” Coli said.

“… I think beer and the outdoors go very well together, and I'm glad to be able to offer the two of them together.”

Studio’s application, meanwhile, allows for the brewery to expand its maximum capacity to 84 people including staff, with a capacity of 30 on the patio. The brewery opened in the South Burnaby area in 2020, and the city granted it permission to open the current temporary patio the same year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

If you’re heading to either of these two breweries this summer and wondering what to drink, here are our official recommendations for patio crushers!

Dageraad’s Burnabarian is an obvious favourite of Burnaby Beacon reporters, paying homage to the beautiful city we call our own. It’s also the perfect “everyday” beer—light, crushable, and unpretentious! Perfect for sunny days on the patio.

If you’re enjoying a drink at Studio’s patio, we highly recommend a pint of Daisy Chain. This New World saison is easy, breezy, beautiful, and summery.

And while we do know it’s still winter, it’s never too early to start thinking about patio season. Here’s a list of other patios we love around the city.
