Join Burnaby Pride for a picnic at Lobley Park from 2–6pm on July 9. All community members are welcome, and the Burnaby firefighters will be cooking up hotdogs (and who doesn’t like firefighters). There will also be vegetarian and Halal options available. Kaya — a Burnaby-based vocalist and songwriter — will be performing music and there will also be kid-friendly games and activities. This event is free to attend.

Address: Lobley Park, 6511 Marlborough Ave.

Come celebrate Tanabata with the Nikkei National Museum on July 10 at their biweekly farmers market. “It celebrates the romantic story of two stars who are only allowed to meet each other once a year so long as the skies are clear. It is usually celebrated on the seventh day of the seventh month. People celebrate by writing their wishes on small pieces of paper (called tanzaku) and hang them on bamboo branches, in hopes they will come true.” The farmers market is from 10am to 2pm at the Nikkei National Museum.

Address: Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre, 6688 Southoaks Cres.

Carried Through the Water, “a solo exhibition by Vancouver-based artist Diyan Achjadi, features the beautiful stop motion watercolour animation Hush, alongside new and recent works on paper that explore the impact of human activity on the ecosystem, including shifting of shorelines due to climate change and land reclamation.” You’ll be able to view this exhibition starting on July 14 from 7 to 9pm at the Burnaby Art Gallery, and also every day after except for Mondays. Entry is by donation and the recommended amount is $5 per person.

Address: Burnaby Art Gallery, 6344 Deer Lake Ave.

Grab a picnic blanket or some chairs and head over to the Deer Lake Festival Lawn on July 16 to enjoy a free performance by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO). If you come by early you’ll be able to try out some traditional Chinese instruments and listen to the VSO School of Music’s Azalea Chinese Music Ensemble, which starts at 5:30pm. Then at 7pm, the VSO will do its performance. This is a great family-friendly activity you will not want to miss.

Address: Deer Lake Park Festival Lawn, 6450 Deer Lake Ave.
