What’s going on in Burnaby: June 4–12

Head over to the Burnaby Farmers Market this Saturday, June 4 for a dog dress-up show called Vanity Fur. Owners will be able to bring their dogs in costume to win some fabulous prizes. You can register your pooch for the contest online, and the dog show starts at 11am, with winners being announced at 12:15pm. Plus, everyone who enters will get a piece of dog-friendly cake. Even if you don’t have a dog to enter, there’s no better way to spend your weekend than looking at cute pups in costume.

While this event isn’t technically in Burnaby, local city councillor Joe Keithley from the punk band DOA is organizing and will be headlining the Rock Against Racism concert happening on June 4 at the Rickshaw Theatre. Other bands performing at the show are Roots Round Up, Kárà-Kátà Afrobeat Group, Buckman Coe, China Syndrome, and the Asian Persuasion All Stars. Tickets cost $20 and are available for purchase online. All proceeds from this event will go towards local organizations that are fighting racism like Nation Skates Youth, South Burnaby Metro Club, Urban Native Youth Association, Aboriginal Mother Centre, and Kárà-Kátà African Village.

Environment Week starts on June 5 and will be going on till June 11. There are plenty of activities taking place all week like invasive species plant pulls on June 5 and 11, guided canoe trips on Deer Lake on June 7, a car trunk sale on June 11, and so much more! Watch the Shadbolt’s resident Youth dance company perform Friday, June 10 and 11 at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts. The performance will be choreographed by Heather Kirkland, Jeannine Miller and the dancers. Tickets cost $15 and can be purchased online.

Carry Me Home is the first “LiViCi” which is a Live and Virtual Circus that is an entirely new type of cross-reality entertainment. This is a live event experienced simultaneously by in-person spectators and online audiences who join through a live stream video and can interact through an online portal where they can experience the performance from within the 3D digital world of Carry Me Home. Carry Me Home combines music, circus, dance, and theatrical performances, together with real-time motion capture and virtual reality technology to create a one-of-a-kind show you won’t want to miss. Tickets cost $25 and the show starts on June 4.
