To celebrate Soon Coffee’s first birthday, they’re selling all their drinks on their menu for $2. That’s right: any drink, any size, and however many you want. The celebration is taking place all day on May 31—so be sure to get to Soon Coffee early, as we’re sure there will be a line of people wanting to get their caffeine fix.

Burnaby Lake Regional Park is one of the best birding spots in all of Burnaby. Join Lindz Marsh and other local birders on May 29 for a walk along the trails and learn all about the birds that call Burnaby Lake their home. This is the best time of year to see seasonal visitors alongside local birds. There are two tours you can sign up for online, one starting at 11:30 am and the other starting at 1:30 pm. This event is free but registration is required and it’s recommended you bring a pair of binoculars if you have them.

Watch the BC Chinese Music Association’s annual concert on May 30 at 7 pm at the Michael J Fox Theatre. There will be performances from BC Chinese Orchestra, BC Chinese Music Ensemble, and BC Chinese Youth Orchestra. Tickets cost $30 and can be purchased online.

Burnaby events

The Elgar Strings Orchestra will be performing at the Deer Lake Gallery on Sunday, June 5 from 12:30 to 2:30 pm. The concert will include classic music from Beethoven, Mozart, and more! Afterwards, there will be a reception with light refreshments and snacks, along with a fundraising bake sale. The fundraiser proceeds will go towards hiring a conductor. Tickets are free and can be reserved online but donations are encouraged.

Join the Burnaby Art Council at the Deer Lake Gallery for nude life drawing session for art students and professional artists on June 3 from 7 to 9 pm. It will consist of a few warmup poses and short poses followed by one longer 20 min pose. There will also be an intermission break where artists can mingle and purchase beverages. This is a 19+ event and tickets cost $20 which includes paper and an easel (you can also bring your own), and one complimentary drink.

If you’re looking for an art activity for all ages, then you can visit the Deer Lake Gallery on June 4 from 7 to 9 pm for their summer paint party. You’ll be making a mixed media project and you’re encouraged to bring in your own shells, rocks, or anything that might be hanging around from your previous vacation. There will also be extra shells provided if you do not have your own. Tickets cost $25 and can be purchased online.

If you’re a future SFU student or are just interested in seeing what the campus has to offer, then head up Burnaby Mountain on June 1 from 11 am to 1:30 pm for a student-led tour. You’ll be able to explore residences, the library, the gym, classrooms, academic buildings, gardens and more! You can register for this free tour online.
