Did you know about this hidden Burnaby rose garden?

There’s a rose garden located at the top of Burnaby Mountain that not enough people are talking about. The Burnaby Mountain Centennial Rose Garden is a perfect spot to spend an evening enjoying the flowers either by yourself, with family, or even on a date.

It’s difficult to see from the parking lot of Burnaby Mountain Park but if you make your way behind the washrooms you’ll be greeted by a beautiful rose garden. There are benches to sit and enjoy the flowers and an archway with flowers growing up the sides. The recent heat hasn’t been kind to the roses, but there are still some flowers around to make your trip worthwhile. From the rose garden you can explore the rest of the park.

To your left, you’ll see a silver carriage with flowers. This was created by Bruce Voyce to “inspire our imaginations and carry us off to the wonderful views of British Columbia’s mountain ranges.” You’re encouraged to snap a picture in the carriage but are asked to stay out of the garden so the more delicate plants aren’t harmed.

From there you can head towards the fence for a stunning lookout point. There’s also a sign there talking about the history of Burnaby Mountain Park which was built in 1996.

Then, turn to your left to look at some eco-sculptures of owls. A sign explains that Burnaby Parks are home to many owl species like the Barn Owl, Great-Horned Owl, Barred Owl, Northern Pygmy Owl, and Northern Saw-Whet Owls. This statue serves as a reminder of how important it is to preserve Burnaby parkland for endangered species like the Barn Owl.

From there you can continue left to check out the Playground of the Gods which you should have seen on your drive up. They are large sculptures that were dedicated to citizens of Burnaby in 1990 to “commemorate twenty-five years of goodwill between the Sister Cities of Kushiro, Japan and the District of Burnaby, Canada.” They’re truly impressive.

From there, the rest of the park is yours to explore. Some great hiking trails branch off from Burnaby Mountain Park. Or, you can catch the sunset with a nice picnic dinner. Maybe you even want to take the quick trip to the SFU Burnaby campus which looks great in the summer. Regardless, Burnaby Mountain Park has plenty to explore.
