This is what's changing at the Beacon

This week we'll be gating some of our work, here's why

Hi folks,

Over the past week, I have been talking almost endlessly about changes coming to the Beacon, in the form of some of our content being exclusive only to members.

You may be wondering why the Beacon is implementing a paid readership model for some of our content.

After all, it’s been two years of having access to all of our stories, event updates, and foodie news for free, so why change things now?

The fact of the matter is, in order for the Beacon to survive, we need support that goes beyond subscribing to our daily newsletter, and we need that support soon.

That’s why we’re introducing our Burnaby Beacon Insider membership program, which will allow you to get full access to the content in our daily newsletters.

This does not mean that you will have to pay to see everything in our newsletters, and we are absolutely not taking the news away and putting it all behind a paywall.

Starting this week, you’ll still get the newsletter with a daily news story as well as important updates about what’s going on around the city.

However, only members will have access to the remainder of the newsletter and web stories, which will include events, restaurant and food coverage, information about local deals and perks, and much more.

An annual membership costs just $8.25 per month (billed annually).

And when we get approved for the federal digital subscription tax credit, you’ll be able to claim this on your personal income tax return next year and get 15% back, making it just $7.01 per month.

A monthly option is available too, for $10.99.

The future of the Beacon is in desperate need of your support. We want to see our little newsroom succeed, and that can most definitely happen but it will need your help to do so.
