Construction on 155 new affordable rental homes for seniors has begun in Burnaby.
The homes are located at 4277 Norland Ave., and will be part of a six-storey building, containing 154 one-bedroom units and one studio, according to a release from the provincial government. All units will be “adaptable and accessible,” adds the release.
Rents range from $375 to approximately $1,400 depending on the size of the unit and the tenant’s income.
The building features an indoor amenity space, laundry facilities, and an outdoor patio space.
The homes are owned and operated by the Dania Society, a non-profit housing organization, which also operates three other seniors’ homes on its Dania Campus of Care. The project is a partnership between Dania, the City of Burnaby, and the provincial government.
The Dania Society provided the land, which is valued at $13.2 million, and the city is contributing a grant of approximately $1.6 million from the Community Benefit Bonus Housing Reserve.
The province and BC Housing are contributing $17 million to the project via the Building BC: Community Housing Fund and will also provide an annual operating subsidy of $946,000.
A groundbreaking ceremony for the project took place last Friday, and was attended by Mayor Mike Hurley, BC Housing Minister Ravi Kahlon, and MLA for Burnaby North, Janet Routledge.
The project is expected to be completed in early 2025.
