Know your riding: New Westminster-Burnaby
The federal election is taking place on September 20 and Burnaby Beacon is providing a snapshot of the 3 ridings in the city. Here is a look at who is running in New Westminster-Burnaby.
An NDP stronghold. Longtime MP Peter Julian has held the seat since the riding was recreated for the 2015 election, but he was the MP for the old riding of Burnaby-New Westminster since 2004.
He won 44% of the vote in 2019. He’s served as NDP House Leader for many years, and he’s also currently the party’s finance critic.
So far in this election campaign, he’s promised to advocate strongly in the House of Commons for a national pharmacare plan.
Lawyer and social worker Rozina Jaffer is running for the Liberals in the riding, writing on her website that she has advocated through her work for the rights of marginalized people and particularly women who have been abused.
“Rozina is committed to dismantling the structural barriers which keep far too many of people [sic] from realizing their true potential. Rozina is passionate about a society that is inclusive and allows each person to realize their full potential,” her website reads.
Paige Munro is running as the Conservative candidate, David Macdonald is running for the Green Party of Canada, and the People’s Party of Canada is running Kevin Heide.
