Burnaby Village Museum’s Heritage Christmas is the city’s very own winter wonderland
Heritage Christmas is now open at the Burnaby Village Museum and it brings with it 10 acres of Christmas fun. And as always, admission to the museum is free! Here are some of the best things you can do at Heritage Christmas.
A winter wonderland
The main attraction of Heritage Christmas is… well, Heritage Christmas. The entire museum is transformed into a winter wonderland with plenty of lights and displays to explore. Take a photo with Santa, or spend your time wandering the grounds enjoying the beautiful light displays. There are tunnels of lights and each tree is sparkling.
You can also enter all of the buildings and view the same exhibits you could visit during normal operating hours. There is volunteer staff all over the place to educate you about the history of Burnaby while you admire the beautiful lights.
Scavenger hunt
There are nine different birds to find across the museum, and trust us when we say this will be no easy feat. When we visited we were able to find the first five with no problem, and then spent an extra hour locating the last four. We may just be bad at scavenger hunts, but we had a blast doing it.
The scavenger hunt is also a great way to make sure you see the entire museum, as it will take you into buildings, through window displays, and to every corner of the map. There’s no prize for completing it but we do feel like better people for having done so.
Check out the eco-sculptures
Eco-sculptures are sculptures made out of plants, and they are all over the museum! We found a giant eagle (which was also on the scavenger hunt, so there’s a clue for you) along with some bears and beavers. Make it your own scavenger hunt to find each and every one.
Christmas goodies
No fun event is complete without food, and there will be plenty for you to munch on. Visit the ice Cream parlour for a warm meal (don’t worry, it serves more than ice cream). You can get simple dishes like fries and chicken strips. There will also be food trucks like Cravings Kettle Corn for you to enjoy.
Dec. 3 tree-lighting ceremony
You can visit the museum on Dec. 3 for the official launch of Heritage Christmas. There will be holiday activities, live entertainment, and a tree-lighting ceremony. Hot chocolate and Christmas cookies will be for sale with proceeds being donated to the Burnaby Christmas Bureau. The ceremony starts at 5pm.
Address: Burnaby Village Museum, 6501 Deer Lake Ave.
