Joshua Boden will spend at least 14 years in prison for murdering Kimberly Hallgarth
Former BC Lions player Joshua Joseph Boden has been sentenced to life in prison with no parole eligibility for 14 years for the second-degree murder of 33-year-old Kimberly Lynn Hallgarth.
Burnaby RCMP responded to a 911 call for an unresponsive woman at a home in the 6700-block of Colborne Avenue in Burnaby on March 15, 2009. Hallgarth, Boden’s ex-girlfriend, was found to be deceased upon arrival, and the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) took over the investigation.
Crown prosecutor Brendan McCabe called the murder “blunt, brutal, and horrific,” according to CBC News.
Boden choked Hallgarth to death, then surrounded her body with pills and put some in her mouth at the bottom of a stairwell, according to Global News.
After IHIT’s initial investigation, the case was turned over to the homicide unit’s cold case team. Investigators acquired new evidence “following an extensive investigation,” according to an IHIT news release, and Boden was arrested in 2018.
He was charged with second-degree murder at the time, and was convicted of the charge on Nov 4, 2021.
“This outcome was due to the perseverance of IHIT’s investigators and our partners,” said Sgt David Lee of IHIT in a written statement. “We wish to recognize all those involved, as well as acknowledge the importance of witnesses who came forward [and] provided testimony, which helped bring justice to Kimberly Hallgarth.”
