Celebrate Lunar New Year with these delicious Burnaby treats

For cultures that follow the lunisolar calendar, February 1st will mark the first day of the Year of the Tiger (Japan welcomed the Year of the Tiger on January 1st and Tibetan Losar will begin on March 3rd). Food is a big part of the celebrations across the cultures, be it the Chinese New Year, Korean New Year (Seollal), or the Vietnamese New Year (Tết Nguyên Đán), and we compiled a list of Lunar New Year-themed treats you can find in Burnaby to get you in the celebratory mood.

Chez Christophe is collaborating with three Vancouver foodies – Deanna Woo, Eating with Kirby, and Foodology – to create the unique flavours that will be featured in its limited-edition nine-piece chocolate box. The three foodies drew inspiration from their childhood and LNY memories and the flavours include Deanna’s Lucky Black Sesame inspired by black sesame soup, Kirby’s Ramen Crunch inspired by crunchy ramen snacks, and Foodology’s Haw Flake inspired by a sweet and sour treat made from Chinese hawthorn fruits. Saint Germain is offering up traditional Lunar New Year treats like a snack platter that includes peanut fritters, sesame fritters, and flakey crunches, as well as steamed radish cake, and their classic mixed fruit cake.Address: 4720 Kingsway #1120C in Metropolis at Metrotown

Tea Cubed Patisserie is a collaboration between Kukki Jar, Niche Creamery, and Thirstea. The three local businesses are combining their strengths to celebrate LNY with delicious Asian flavours. Treats offered include mango sago cream puffs, Thai tea black sesame puffs, matcha mandarin cakes (gluten-free), and milk teas. Head to Station Square from January 28th to January 31st to enjoy a delicious treat with matcha jasmine or oolong milk tea! Celebrate the Year of the Tiger with a delicious mango lychee mousse from Gary’s Patisserie. While Minus is technically located in Vancouver, it sits right on the border of Boundary Rd so we thought we’d include it on this list because technically this spot is very close to Burnaby! Enjoy a delicious cake in red and gold (colours that signify good fortune in Chinese and Vietnamese cultures) with an adorable fondant tiger from Minus Cake Boutique.
