Plus: BC Cancer ends program offering BC patients treatment in the US and the City of Burnaby unveils its new RCMP building design, renamed the Community Safety Building

Good morning, Burnaby!
Burnaby’s federal election race is heating up even more, as one candidate for the Conservative Party was ousted last week, without much explanation and 200 residents launched a Change.org petition to bring him back. The candidate and the party offered no reasons for the decision, which remains a mystery for the time being.
In other news, the City of Burnaby recently revealed the design of its new RCMP detachment, which has been renamed the Community Safety Building, complete with renderings and even a 3D fly-through video. The new design was presented at the city’s financial management committee meeting on April 1.
This week, BC Cancer ended a program that was sending patients from BC to Bellingham, Washington in the US for radiation treatment. According to a BC Government press release, the program is ending as cancer treatment wait times have improved in BC.

Conservative candidate ousted

The Conservative Party of Canada’s candidate for New Westminster-Burnaby-Maillardville, Lourence Singh was recently removed as one of the party’s candidates, with some speculating that his ouster may have something to do with favourable comments he made about the Chinese government back in 2021.
Singh’s removal from the race has prompted almost 200 residents and supporters to launch a petition on Change.org calling on the Conservative Party to reinstate Singh as a candidate. Few details were forthcoming regarding the reason behind Singh’s removal as a candidate.

BC Cancer ends US program

Since May 2023, some cancer patients in BC were offered the option to receive radiation treatment in Bellingham, Washington, as the province built up its capacity for cancer treatment and reduced wait times.
This week, the BC Government announced in a press release that it will end this program, adding that in-province wait times have improved in the last two years, leading to a decline in the number of patients opting for treatment in the US. Since the program’s launch in 2023, 1,107 patients have completed radiation treatment in the US.
“Based on current participation rates, it is estimated that approximately 104 patients would access the program over the coming year if it were to continue. This represents 0.6% of the 16,900 patients projected to need radiation treatment in 2025-26. However, these patients can be accommodated in B.C. without the need to travel out of country,” the BC Government press release said.

Almost one year after Burnaby Mayor Mike Hurley attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the city’s new RCMP detachment, the city revealed its design. The new building, renamed the Community Safety Building, is currently in the “design and construction phase,” with design and construction teams working simultaneously on the project. Burnaby residents can watch a “fly-through” video of the design in 3D by visiting the link in the last slide of this presentation.
According to a report submitted to the city’s Financial Management Committee on April 1, “After the foundation is completed, the project team will focus on the above-grade structure, which is expected to be completed in Q4 2026.”
The new building will replace the city’s existing RCMP detachment, which was built in 1967 and will include seismic, environmental and accessibility upgrades.
