If you don’t have time to go all the way to Kits Beach or Boundary Bay, here are five spots in Burnaby where you can still enjoy some world-class waterfront views—from ocean and river to lake and pond.

Yes, Burnaby has its very own beach! This local gem has everything you could want from an oceanside spot: picnic areas with views of Indian Arm and Deep Cove, walking paths, an off-leash dog area, and abundant marine life. It’s also a fantastic place to go swimming, kayaking, or paddle-boarding.
Once it gets warmer in the summer though, make sure you get there early to snag a parking spot as it can get quite busy!

One of our beautiful city’s crown jewels, Burnaby Lake is home to a startling diversity of wildlife including herons, turtles, and beavers—and it’s also a must visit for birdwatching aficionados. The long and winding boardwalks that go directly along the lakeshore are one of the city’s most well-known views—as are the water lilies that bob along in the water beside it.

A favourite of Beacon managing editor Simran Singh, this park situated on the shores of the Fraser River is a dream for anyone who likes to work out outdoors. It’s got waterfront trails perfect for walking, running, and biking. It’s got a fitness circuit with 12 workout stations, complete with equipment for aerobic, muscular strength, core and balance/flexibility exercises. If you’re into team sports, it’s got volleyball courts. But you’ll probably find us lounging in one of the picnic areas, watching the tugboats chug on by.

You might be surprised to see Central Park make this list, given that it’s somewhat of an urban forest and not close to any major waterways. But this beautiful park has two lovely little ponds perfect for a midday picnic. There are tons of huge fish that laze around, and come springtime the whole park is full of the most adorable ducklings and goslings you’ve ever seen.

A note from the Beacon's Srushti Gangdev: "I gotta be honest guys, I have an irrational hatred of Deer Lake Park. But as the most well-known park in the city, it’s probably weird to not include it on this list. So, here it is. Deer Lake Park features pedal-boating, canoeing, a small sandy picnic area, and lots of geese."
