What’s on the menu: New Burnaby restaurants on our radar in January

New year, new Burnaby restaurants to try!

There are always new foodie destinations popping up around the city, and we’re here to keep you updated.

From sushi to dim sum, here are some new Burnaby restaurants on our radar this January.

Ajishou Japanese Cuisine is now open at The Amazing Brentwood. Ajishou means the “craftsman of taste” and that’s what Ajishou tries to embody with its modern take on traditional Japanese fare.

Address:4567 Lougheed Hwy. Ajishou is located upstairs next to Neptune Palace Seafood Restaurant on Brentwood Plaza, in between Sephora and Earls.

Mijune Pak on Instagram: "First for everything! First time trying this lobster and barley dish, an original dish at fine dining Chinese restaurant, Neptune Palace Seafood. Also ordered the roast goose, which is massive compared to the duck. It’s a challenge to find roast goose in Vancouver while it’s super common in Hong Kong. The goose here is from Montreal and it’s different than the ones in Hong Kong and also handled differently. Hard to compare and say which is better because one can be better than the other depending on many variables. Besides the difference in size, compared to duck, goose is generally fattier and sweeter. I still prefer the roast duck at Chang An, but if comparing “Peking duck”, then this is worth trying as a Peking goose and not duck. On the table: 1) Salted Egg Yolk Fish Skins 😍 2) Pickled Daikon 3) Marinated Goose Wings ("webs" on menu). These are delicious👌🏻Naturally they don’t have a lot of meat and it’s mostly bone, but the meat it has is excellent and well marinated. 4) BBQ 2 Choices • Roasted Pork 👍🏻👍🏻 • Honey BBQ Pork - good, but not as impressive as the roast pork. 5) Swallow Nest w/Crab Meat 6) Crispy Roasted Goose (2 courses) • First course: Beijing-Style Roast Goose Wraps 7) Crispy Roasted Goose (2 courses) • Second course: Roast Goose and Bitter Melon in Sizzling Hot Pot 8) Sauteed Lobster with Barley and Green Onions - good, but more of an interesting concept and the barley is more of a nutritional twist from the chef. Still good and well cooked lobster, but literally lobster and sautéed barley in a soy based sauce. 9) Pea Tips with Salted Eggs in Soup 10) Rice Noodle with Scrambled Eggs and Prawns. Comfort food. 11) Caramel Pudding - impressive French creme caramel with little gelatin. Wasn’t expecting this at a traditional Chinese restaurant. 12) Red Bean Soup with Coconut Milk"

Neptune Palace is known for serving up delectable dim sum and gourmet Chinese dishes. It also was just named to the Michelin Recommended list, so it’s an awesome option for a very delicious dining experience in the city.

Address: 4567 Lougheed Hwy. Located upstairs next to Ajishou on Brentwood Plaza, in between Sephora and Earls.

La Taqueria

Alright, even though La Taqueria at The Amazing Brentwood has been open since November, we needed to remind you how great Burnaby’s newest Mexican spot is.

If you’re craving tacos, burritos, enchiladas, and more traditional Mexican fare, La Taqueria is the place to go. It also has fantastic cocktail offerings (did someone say Margaritas?) and awesome mocktails. And if you’re looking for a Tequila tasting, the bar staff is extremely knowledgeable and will introduce you to authentic, hard-to-find Tequilas that will add an extra oomph to your dining experience.

Address: 4580 Brentwood Blvd., Unit 1210
