Burnaby eats: A foodie tour of Royal Oak Avenue and Rumble Street

Attention, South Burnaby foodies! This one’s for you. If you’re looking for an itinerary of delicious eats in your neighbourhood—or you’re looking to explore a new, relatively quiet corner of Burnaby—here’s a list of excellent and diverse restaurants to try around the corner of Royal Oak Avenue and Rumble Street.

The intersection is a hub of great places to check out, and the best part is that it’s just a short walk down the hill from Royal Oak SkyTrain Station! Let’s get to it.

Tenen proudly serves traditional Eastern European cuisine that co-owners and childhood friends Sasha Mirkovic and Goran Radjenovic promise will take you on a culinary and cultural trip through the Balkans. The dishes you’ll find here are rich, comforting, and above all delicious! Make sure you try the ushtipci (buttermilk fritters), the goulash, the cabbage rolls—and of course, the baklava to finish.

Some of the best KFC (Korean fried chicken) in the city! Gaya Korean Restaurant serves up a huge selection of flavours, including sweet and spicy yangnyeom and padak with green onion and soy sauce. It’s also got other favourites like hot pot, spicy buckwheat noodles, and tteok-bokki—life-changing stir-fried rice cakes!

A meal at Stem is an artistic journey, melding traditional Japanese culinary techniques with seasonal ingredients. Chefs Tatsuya and Yoshi aim to give the usually upscale kappo cuisine an approachable and modern twist, with dishes like BC pine mushroom tempura and daikon beer pickles (made with Four Winds Huftgold Pilsner!). For the most innovative dishes on offer, make sure to try the omakase tasting menus.

You might pass by this small, unassuming hole-in-the-wall at first glance—but that’s a mistake. Google reviewers say this is the best Pinoy cuisine in the city. Try Filipino favourites like lumpia, empanadas, and halo-halo! Says one reviewer: “This joint made helped me discover Turons (Filipino Fried Banana Spring Rolls) and I will be forever grateful!! Absolutely delicious and mega yummy! Can’t wait to go back and try exploring some new Filipino goodies!”

Your go-to for freshly baked goodies in the Royal Oak area! BJ Bakery and Deli serves up everything from cupcakes, pies, and hot cross buns to house-made sausage rolls. A taste of France in South Burnaby! Whether you prefer sweet or savoury, Adam’s Crepes has something for everyone. The joint’s crepe artist, Tarik, was born and raised in Paris and he’s been treating Burnaby to the authentic tastes of the city of love since 2015. While there are tons of flavours on offer… can you get any better than a simple sugar lemon crepe?

OK, this one’s not right at the intersection of Royal Oak and Rumble. But it is a veritable Burnaby icon, just a 15-minute stroll away! Studio Brewing opened its doors in early 2021 and it’s already putting Burnaby on the map as an award-winning destination for beer lovers. You may or may not spot the reporter of this article sitting on the Studio patio with a pint of Sun Jungle at a slightly alarming frequency.
