Culture Days are coming to Burnaby from Sept. 23 ‘til Oct. 16 and will be filled with plenty of free activities, demonstrations, and discussions. These events will be happening all over Burnaby at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, Burnaby Art Gallery, and Burnaby Village Museum. There will be flash mobs, print-making on the back of a bike, musical performances, and so much more. For a full schedule of all the events, visit the City of Burnaby website.

Sept. 25 is World Rivers Day, and to celebrate you can visit the Burnaby Village Museum for a free event to “learn about our local waterways and restoration efforts to help protect these environments.” There will be displays, tours, activities, crafts, and live entertainment. This event takes place from 11:30am to 4:30pm and for a full list of activities, you can visit the Burnaby Village Museum website.

Physio Collective is celebrating its grand opening on Sept. 24 from 2-4pm. There will be food, drinks, and a balloon artist for the kids. You can also follow Physio Collective on Instagram for a giveaway of a free 60-minute RMT session, physiotherapy session, and kinesiology session to celebrate.

StreetFest has returned in-person at SFU! This is a festival designed to bring the community together, held by SFU, UniverCity Community Association, and the Simon Fraser Student Society. There will be plenty of different vendors and activities and there is even a promise of a “few surprises.” Not convinced? Well, you’re about to be. The Burnaby Beacon team will have a booth this year where we’ll be giving out free tote bags (as long as you are subscribed to our daily newsletter) and the chance to win some prizes. StreetFest takes place on Sept. 16 from 11am to 7pm.

Jokers Canada is returning to Burnaby and we’ve got four tickets with your name on them! Performances include Jacob Samuel (winner of the 2021 Juno for Comedy Album Of The Year), Julie Kim (CBC, JFL), Larke Miller (Wpg Comedy Festival), and Nathan Hare (JFL Van, Portland Sketch Fest). To welcome the incoming Hellenisms Past and Present, Local and Global postdoctoral fellow Jake Ransohoff to SFU, he will be hosting a talk called “A ‘Uniquely Byzantine’ Punishment? Blinding, Disfigurement, and Perceptions of Cultural Difference Across the Medieval Mediterranean.” This is part of the SNF Centre for Hellenic Studies’ Fall Seminar Series and is free for the public to attend. The talk takes place both in person and online on Sept. 16 from 2:30-4:30pm. You can register to attend this event here.

To celebrate the Burnaby Village Museum’s 50th anniversary, it’s hosting talks on a wide range of topics. Some of the talks include a rare behind-the-scenes of artifact collection for the museum by assistant curator Kate Petrusa, and a look at the rich culture of Coast Salish Peoples and its role at the museum by Carleen Thomas, special projects manager for the Tsleil-Waututh Nation Treaty, Lands, and resources department and chancellor at Emily Carr University of Art and Design.
