Explore Burnaby: A 10km loop around Burnaby Lake Regional Park

Did you know Burnaby is home to one of the largest lakes in the Lower Mainland? What’s even better is you can go on a beautiful walk around it.

The Burnaby Lake Park Trail is a 10km loop with plenty of viewpoints along the path for you to enjoy.

There are plenty of points along the path where you can start and since the path is a loop, it doesn’t matter where you start. If you’re looking to drive we would recommend starting at Cottonwood Trail and walking across the west bridge of Burnaby Lake. There are plenty of parking spots, but the trail can get busy during the weekends so plan your trip accordingly. If transit is more of your vibe, you can ride the SkyTrain to the Lake City Way station. From there it’s just a 10-minute walk south right to Eagle Creek.

The loop has minimal elevation and should take you a little over two hours to complete (not including all the stops to look at the views). Along Eagle Creek, you can walk down to the pier at Piper’s Spit which draws in all sorts of bird enthusiasts. You’ll see people with huge cameras trying to capture the perfect shot of the geese and ducks. But don’t worry, you won’t need fancy equipment to see these birds. It’s difficult not to see the birds since they also seem to enjoy walking along the path.

Close to the pier, there is also a viewing tower to give you a great view over the lake. The bottom floor of the viewing tower is wheelchair accessible, but to get to the top you do need to climb a set of stairs.

There are plenty of surprises to see along the Burnaby Lake Park Trail (don’t be scared when the train passes by like we were). The trail feels so far removed from the city, yet you’ll be surprised when a portion of the trail has a view of a road or a commercial building.

If 10km sounds like a lot, there are other trails you can do as well. The Brunette Headwaters Trail is 3.6km and still has some great views and will take you to the Cariboo Dam.

While this trail is easier than some of the other ones in Burnaby (*cough* Robert Burnaby Park *cough*), we would recommend wearing a good pair of walking shoes and bringing some water. Dogs are welcome but must be leashed and no bikes are allowed on the trail.
