IIO called to Burnaby after police incident in Kensington Plaza
The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) was deployed to Burnaby after a police incident at Kensington Square near Hastings Street and Kensington Avenue on Friday morning.
The IIO is called in to investigate cases where a member of the public experiences death or serious harm after an interaction with police.
According to a BC RCMP statement sent Friday afternoon, Burnaby RCMP responded to a call from Emergency Health Services around 5:57am, regarding a man who was “overdosing” and had reportedly been in a physical altercation with an employee working at a local business.
The man was apprehended when he began to show signs of physical distress, stated police and Emergency Health Services and Advance Life Support attempted to revive him but he was pronounced dead on scene.
The IIO is now investigating to determine if the man’s death was linked to police actions.
