After nearly two decades, the Burnaby RCMP’s restorative justice program was put on hold in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic began. Restorative justice started in Burnaby in 2001 as a community-based program called the Burnaby Restorative Action Group. Staff changes during the pandemic contributed to the RCMP’s decision to pause the program.
In the spring of 2023 the City of Burnaby decided to hire new staff to take over the restorative justice program. Staff members who work on the program are municipal employees, but their offices are located within the Burnaby RCMP detachment, and they work closely with RCMP members.
Justin Hohne joined the program as youth services restorative justice coordinator in the spring of last year and has since worked on growing the program and bringing it back to life.

Burnaby RCMP launches all-girls summer soccer camp

Burnaby RCMP organized its first all-girls summer soccer camp this year from August 6-8.
Sixty-eight girls registered for the camp, and 60 took part. Burnaby RCMP has been offering annual summer soccer camps for Burnaby children since 2017, which have grown steadily in popularity. The original format for the camps was coeducational for children ages 8-13. After some children suggested an all-girls camp, the RCMP decided to pilot a new camp for girls.
Burnaby RCMP offers the summer soccer camps free of charge. The Burnaby School District helps select the children most likely to benefit from the camps. Families that cannot afford to send their children to private summer camps are prioritized in the selection process, and only Burnaby residents are eligible to join.

Artist in residence helped design mobile art studio

Three months after FLEET mobile art studio’s official opening in Edmonds Park, Snuneymuxw artist Eliot White-Hill, whose Coast Salish name is Kwulasultun, has finally started his artist residency at the studio. White-Hill has a special connection with the space; he helped design the mobile studio along with several other Indigenous artists who took inspiration from traditional Coast Salish longhouse design.
“Within traditional Coast Salish art, the use of cedar is really important, but from a construction standpoint, using more sustainable materials is really what we wanted to emphasize,” White-Hill said. “I don’t know what they actually ended up using, but that was what we tried to make sure that we drove home in the consultation.”
White-Hill and other Indigenous artists provided feedback on the design during the consultation sessions, which took place over 12-14 months.
Where to eat & drink
🥙 Ramie’s Greek Restaurant. A cozy neighbourhood spot serving filling platters of souvlaki and roast meat dishes, as well as an array of classic dips and appetizers like hummus, tzatziki and piping hot saganaki. Of special note is their bougatsa for dessert, a creamy Greek custard wrapped in phyllo pastry and dusted with cinnamon and icing sugar for a decadent sweet treat to finish.
🍜 Thai Chef Eatery. If you’re looking for a delicious lunch to lift you up out of that midday work slump, you’ll find it at this humble Thai eatery serving bright dishes like spicy basil noodles, larb gai and pineapple curry with prawns. They deliver nothing short of a flavour explosion.
🫓 D Roti Shak. A warm and inviting Caribbean takeaway specializing not just in roti (chicken, goat, beef, shrimp and veggie are all great options here) but also in staples like oxtail, jerk chicken, curry goat on rice and doubles—a heavenly pile of chickpeas served on fried barras.
