What’s going on in Burnaby: Aug. 19-28

On Sunday, Aug. 21 from 11am to 2:30pm there will be a Community BBQ at UniverCity Town Square next to SFU’s Burnaby Mountain Campus. There will be live music, ping pong and other games, kids’ activities, plus free hot dogs, drinks, and harvest veggies! This event is hosted by the UniverCity Community Association and the Burnaby Firefighters Charitable Society.

August 26 and 27 are the last two days to enjoy the Brentwood Block Party this year, and it’s sure to be a great weekend to visit. It’s the adult-focused event where there will be wine, beer, corn toss, and great music and performances. Plus there will be plenty of vendors selling a whole range of stuff. Entry is free and the party is from 4–10pm on the 26 and 11am–6pm on the 27.

Crave the Heights 2022 is returning to Burnaby. This special 10-day event showcases all the amazing food that’s available in the Burnaby Heights neighbourhood. Plus, each restaurant will have “special menu items, drink features, and delicious desserts.” This event is from is happening from Aug. 19 to 28. There will also be live jazz music performances from local musicians at the Heights Fountain Square from 4 to 6pm, Gabriel Mark Hasselbach is playing on Aug. 19, the New Orleans Street Party is playing Aug. 26, and Freakin’ Groovies is playing Aug. 27.
Girolino for kids, presented by Appia Development, is coming to Burnaby on Aug. 27 from 7:30am to 1pm. This is a pedal and dash event open to kids aged 5-12 at the Confederation Park track. Helmets are mandatory, bikes must be in good working condition to enter, and entry costs $5.

The last Community Cleanup of the season is happening on Aug. 27 at the Edmonds Community Centre from 9am to noon. Everyone is welcome, and equipment like gloves and litter pickers will be provided by the city. Anyone who volunteers will meet at the parking lot, get a brief orientation, and then be sent on their way to clean.

The BC Epilepsy Society is holding a free picnic at Confederation Park on Aug. 27 from noon to 2pm. There will be food, games, and prizes! There are picnic tables at the park but you’re encouraged to bring picnic blankets and chairs. Space for this event is limited and you can register online.

Summer Cinemas returns for the entire month of August! You can enjoy a free family-friendly outdoor movie in Burnaby every Friday starting at 8:30pm at Civic Square. The movie schedule is as follows:
Aug. 19 – Paddington 2
Aug. 26 – Shaun the Sheep Movie
Sept. 2 – Ron’s Gone Wrong
The Lego Movie is also playing on Aug. 20 at Edmonds Park.
