La Taqueria Burnaby serves up authentic tacos and Mexican fusion cuisine
Good tacos are hard to come by in Burnaby—when we attempted to find some we only found two places: Don Oso’s and Olivo Cafe. But La Taqueria’s new location at the Amazing Brentwood is a much-needed addition to our list.
The newly opened store serves up tacos (obviously) alongside staples like quesadillas and burritos, but its menu has some interesting additions that are worth mentioning.
The birramen is an excellent example of the innovative dishes it serves. The name says it all: imagine a birria taco-inspired ramen. It’s a bowl of birria tatemada brisket broth with handmade rice and corn flour noodles and a diablo soft-boiled egg. It’s topped with pickled onions, strips of white onion a la julienne, cilantro leaves, shallot oil, and a crispy birria taco on top.
But if you’re looking for a more classic Mexican street food experience, you need to order one of the 14 different types of tacos. When we visited we ordered the birria taco (because how could we not?) and the fish Baja taco with a Jarritos to drink. If you’re eating Mexican without a Jarritos then you’re doing something wrong.
Both tacos came on a corn tortilla, and we found two to be very filling despite how badly we wanted to order more. The birria taco is made with Jalisco-style beef birria folded into a taco and fried until crispy with melted cheese, salsa verde, and a side of consomé for dipping. Consider this the beef dip of Mexico. For those who are regulars on TikTok, you might recognize birria tacos because they were trending online a year ago along with the likes of dalgona coffee. It’s been difficult to find a restaurant serving good ones, but thankfully La Taqueria has done it.
The fish Baja was made with battered wild seasonal fish, coleslaw, salsa cruda, chipotle mayo, and topped with cilantro. One bite in and we felt as if we were transported back to a tiny fish taco restaurant in Mexico where we grew up eating every weekend. It came with a generous portion of fish and it was perfectly fried—crispy but still tender on the inside. If these two tacos were any indication of how good the rest of the menu would be, we can almost guarantee whatever you end up ordering will be delicious.
La Taqueria also recently added a brunch menu with many delicious additions. We’re excited to dig into the Huevos Divorciados, which are two sunny-side-up eggs with tomatillo sauce, guajillo sauce, refried beans, and queso fresco. It will also serve other classic Mexican breakfasts like chilaquiles alongside breakfast sandwiches and burritos. You can order brunch on weekends from 9am to 2pm.
La Taqueria should be your go-to the next time you’re craving tacos. It’s open from 11am to 10pm on weekdays, 9am to 11pm on Saturdays, and 9am to 10pm on Sundays.
