Here’s what to try at the new R+D Kitchen at The Amazing Brentwood
R+D Kitchen is a new test kitchen by White Spot that just opened May 10 at Tables in The Amazing Brentwood. They serve White Spot classics in addition to some new food options you can’t get anywhere else. The Beacon was lucky enough to get an exclusive first look at the restaurant and try some of their new menu items.
The restaurant is gorgeous with giant windows facing toward the mountains and a giant bar in the middle of the restaurant. The bar was being run by Kaitlyn Stewart, who is the 2017 World Class Global Bartender of the Year. She also created exclusive drinks for the R+D Kitchen like the Jalapeño Margarita and the Hugo Spritz. If you’re visiting R+D Kitchen for the first time then you need to try one of these cocktails. They also have some excellent non-alcoholic drinks like their No No Mojito.
Another thing to appreciate about the menu is how many vegan and vegetarian options there are included. We’d recommend you try the Chipotle Vegan Bites. They had a nice consistency with a very subtle kick of spice which was very enjoyable. The Harissa Cauliflower Steak or the Cauliflower and Cashew Burger are also other vegan options, but the burger itself was a little bit too soft and made it difficult to eat without it falling apart.
However, the stars of the show were the many handhelds. White Spot has always been known for its delicious sandwiches and burgers and R+D Kitchen is no different. Our top picks were the R+D House Wagyu Burger and the Louisiana Fried Chicken Burger. The House Wagyu Burger had perfectly seasoned beef topped with aged white cheddar, hickory smoked bacon, and mustard onion confit. What looked like a relatively simple burger ended up being our favourite thing on the menu. The Louisiana Fried Chicken was also tasty and had the perfect crunch to it.
To finish off our visit, we were given a taste of the Caramelized Pineapple Gelato Coupe which was an entirely vegan dessert. It tasted exactly like gelato made with dairy and was fruity and refreshing.
R+D Kitchen is open Monday to Friday from 11 am to 11 pm and Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 11 pm. They also serve brunch on weekends starting at 10 am until 3 pm. Additionally, R+D Kitchen has Happy Hour from 2 pm to 5 pm and from 8 pm till late. With so many delicious items on their menu, be sure to visit this new Burnaby restaurant soon.
